The team to win the first ever Pooja Knockout Tournament in 1951


Until the 1930's, the game of cricket was unknown to the people of Kerala, at least in the form of matches. That time, there were a few daring young Princes who talked about thegame and even practiced crude concrete wicket at the Princes Club (as the Tripunithura Cricket Club was known before), which was exclusive for the male members of the Cochin Royalty.

In 1948 the Victoria College Team from Palakkad came to play a couple of matches in Ernakulam. They requested Sri. K V Kelappan Thampuran, the first secretary of the Kerala Cricket Association and the driving force behind the games in Tripunithura, if they could play a match in the Club.

By then, Princes Club had a team and the ground. Thus on an uneven patch of ground, an improvised pitch, perhaps with no strict dress code, the first game was played. This ground later developed into the historic Palace Oval, where the Pooja Cricket Tournament is played. The Pooja Knockout Cricket Tournament finds its place in the history of Cricket as the first limited over Cricket tournament. The first tournament was held in 1951. There was no looking back since.

The Tripunithura Cricket Club produced a long list of excellent players down the years who represented University and State levels. It has also contributed able Cricket administrators and officials who have left their indelible imprint in the game.

The club still produces players of high caliber. The club conducts summer cricket camps every year to catch the young cricketing talents. The club provides adequate training facilities and match practices with the support of BCCI approved trainers. Some of the players are already in various IPL teams.
